Digit reference

Cheques and invoices use 壹贰叁…; everyday writing uses 一二三…. The character 零 marks a skipped place, e.g. 一千零五 has empty tens and hundreds.

How the reading works

Chinese groups numbers by four digits, with 万 and 亿 acting like separators. A single 零 fills any skipped place: 1005 is 一千零五, never 一千零零五. Trailing zeros are silent: 1200 is 一千二百.

Financial uppercase writes the whole part, then 元, then 角 and 分. A whole amount ends with 整; when the jiao place is empty but fen is not, one 零 stands in — 1.05 reads 壹元零伍分.
